I am going to commit to taking more pictures of people, not just food. I am going to commit to write the scripture of the day. I am not afraid of commitment. New Hair

New Hobby: Running! But then I was down with the flu and haven't ran in a week. The best part is my man is a runner already and he is my motivation. Thankful for a sweet marriage! Thankful for God's plan in marriage, Gen 2:24.

New Pains: Okay, after a few months of running I thought I'd give the torture chamber a chance (Oh, did I say that out loud) I mean the GRAVITY class at our post gym. OUCH!

New in the Kitchen: Artisan Bread in 5 Minutes a Day. Yum, easy, better with time.

Not so New: Still crushing on a Vespa. My husband even took me to the local Harley Davidson shop to test drive one. Tip, it really isn't cool for a guy to test drive a Vespa at a Harley shop, so wow, thank you to my man for that afternoon! One day, hopefully when we are stationed in Italy I will be traveling to the bakery to pick up our baguettes on this sweet scooter.

I have struggled with this in my life. Busy-ness, blogging, facebook, creativity, Bible study, face-to-face socializing. Who else has this battle. I know I love to read blogs, so I am sure others do as well. I am an Army Wife now and my life is so busy. The connections with others are so abundant, and for that I am thankful, yet it all takes time. I still want to "journal" here... so today I am updating basic pictures from the past few months (really for my own good, to get me back on track).

This is really a confession. You see I have an issue. Food. Creating. Good. Food.

Mostly fatty and rich foods. To bring JOY. What?!? JOY?

Twisted. I know. So I am in a battle to let this go. For the JOY I desire should not come from foods, sugar and fat. This JOY should come from the SWEETNESS only CHRIST JESUS can deliver. Yet I seek out that validation when I deliver such delights and gain the JOY and glory from others enjoying these creations.

Nehemiah 8:10

Nehemiah said,

“Go and enjoy

choice food and sweet drinks,

and send some to those

who have nothing prepared.

This day is holy to our Lord.

Do not grieve,

for the joy of the

LORD

is your strength.”

So I "enjoy choice food and sweet drinks" and I love to share these creations, yet the JOY I receive is from the sharing and creating this is what I desire. I should be in desire for the JOY of the LORD for HE is my strength.

I am torn. It is Christmas season. I LOVE baking. I went to culinary school for goodness sake! Yet, I am being called out. Called to a bigger JOY. A higher SWEETNESS. So although my family will not go without culinary delights, I will moderate this year. Christ will be my JOY. Christ will be the SWEET celebration of this season.

Advent Celebrations

The origins of the Advent calendar come from German Lutherans who, at least as early as the beginning of the 19th century, would count down the 24 days of Advent physically.

This Hunfeld, Germany City Hall building is turned into an Advent Calendar.

These are the traditional Advent Calendars that are filled with fine German Chocolates that I grew up with...well, there were four children in our family, so we took turns opening the doors. I have three children and every year we purchase a calendar from our Military Commissary for each of our children (the Commissary is like a grocery store, and because we have such a diverse community in the Army they provide many favorites from worldwide locations.)

Tonight I am working on cutting out this Advent Calendar with my Cricut.

Smores Cupcakes

I made a tutorial a while ago with this wonderful creation:

SMORES CUPCAKES

Start by mixing a graham cracker crumb crust

(the typical butter graham crumbs and a bit of sugar).

After it is pressed into your lined muffing tins tip with your favorite chocolate cake recipe.

Bake as you would a cupcake, and top with large marshmallows.

Place under broiler until toasty and golden brown.

Swirl a large amount of Chocolate Buttercream around the toasted marshmallow.

Enjoy!

I have been working on some gifts, and it was a sweet friends birthday... so I put together some supplies and created

I used an old felted wool blanket that I had dyed for the lining and super cute fabrics for the outer coat.

Printed matching labels.

Used a Starbucks sleeve for the pattern, and Velcro as the closure...

Packaged in a treat bag with matching papers and shreds.

God has blessed me indeed! I have a life full of friends, facebook, homeschooling, crafting projects and a most incredible husband! So I have seemed to forget about blogging, yet I LOVE to read other's blogs. So I am going to try to continue to blog~ mostly because it is a journal of sorts, one that focuses on positive things, thoughts, and projects throughout my days.

PWOC... another military acronym, for Protestant Women of the Chapel. What a huge blessing God has given me in the study and fellowship with other Christ centered women. If you are a military wife, please, please consider going to a PWOC on your base/post. You will connect easily and find quick friendships. No matter where you are in your faith, you will be welcomed!

I found some pictures that I had taken last week or so when I made a breakfast of Cinnamon Bun Pancakes for my family.

Just use your favorite pancake recipe and separate out 1 cup of the batter. To that batter add cinnamon blend and some brown sugar (I love the Pampered Chef Blend), place into a squeeze bottle or a pastry bag and swirl onto the batter. Looks fantastic and tastes wonderful, not to mention the yummy smell!

Popcorn Crazy

My sister gave me this awesome set of popcorn bowls, and even my husband is LOVING our popcorn habit. We enjoy this treat 3-4 times a week, which goes along well with my husband's hobby of collecting dvds. So, my "regular" popcorn recipe is to put 3 TBS oil, 2/3 cup yellow popcorn, and 2 tsp of Jolly Time butter salt into my old fashioned stove top popper on medium/high heat. Pop and turn until there is not more popping. Eat in the WONDERFUL popcorn bowls while watching a great movie on the Clear Play DVD player. LOVE it!

Dollar Tree Vases with a fluted top, and candle stick holders. Yup, entire project for three had a total cost of $6 plus glue.
I used Gorilla Glue, but it "foams" up, so next time I would use that E5000 or E6000 glue. Plus, my glue was just about out... and so I cut the container open, and glue was EVEryWheRE!!! what a mess... don't do that, clean up took forever using Bar Keepers Friend scrub. Wow, still little foam marks on my counter! Too funny!
That's pretty EASY PEASY... glue the candlestick holder to the bottom of the vase... I turned them upside down for pressure. Worked like a charm! Filled them with fall colors. LOVE it!

First, I am so sorry that I have not been blogging lately. I don't have my great camera anymore, and have been using my iphone for pictures. I like to post pictures when I blog. I love reading blogs, especially blogs that have tutorials on creative makings... so I thought I'd better get back on the blog coaster!

I spent a wonderful evening with a group of ladies making cookie bouquets and enjoying the fellowship that Christ has so given to His believers. I am blessed while living at Fort Bliss!

My sweet daughter turned 19 this year and wanted a cake that DID NOT say "Happy Birthday" on it. "They get it already", was what she pretty much said. So we went classic, with a Tiffany Blue Fondant Covered Chocolate Cake with Dark Chocolate filling.

The White Icing decorations are the new Cricut Cake Icing sheets cut with my Cricut Expressions and applied with water as glue. Stunning choices. She is stunning, so it was a perfect match. I love you Danielle!

I am working on some new projects and painting our quarters (not money, we are US Army) and will try to post pictures and step by step tutorials on some projects. I am really in the Christmas Spirit already, and am hoping to get some crafting done early. LOVE it!

Pink-Black-Green Challenge

The Pink Stamper had a challenge this week: Use the cricut and the colors pink, green and black for your project. I used the Home Decor cartridge for the frames, the "hope" and the backgrounds. Scripture is Zapfina font, the sugar cookies are home baked, as well as the fondant. The black swirls and dots are hand painted. The fondant is lighter in the picture than in person. I used a tin pail purchased at the dollar spot in Target. I am hosting a Chaplain's Wife's Coffee this week and we are creating these to take home.

Tutorial: Cheater Petit Fours

Okay, so have you seen this! This super cheater petit four recipe?! Really it is all over the web. here, and here and now I am adding a tutorial as well.

Yes, you start with these:

Your children will squeal!

Trim them into squares, as the family waits for the bits of snacks.

Get your rolled fondant out (recipe here) Okay, so take my word on this...don't use the store bought fondant, make your own. You will love fondant if you make your own, if you use the store bought fondant you will not be happy!

The biggest part of this tip, don't roll the pieces out like I did. By the time you get to the last square it will be to dry to form around your bitty cake piece.

If you wrap your cake and it crack, don't cry. the warmth of your fingers will make it flexible and you will be able to have a smooth edge.

See, if you have a round of rolled fondant, you can form it over the cake much easier.

The bottoms don't have to be perfect...right?!

Color some fondant green for leaves, and pink and yellow for flowers

To get the tiny flowers to adhere to your fondant topped cakes, just use a little drop of water. Place in mini cupcake liners for presentation.

Are you surprised?! Total cheater, huh?! But big bang presentation!

Homemade Cupcake Wrappers and Picks

Have you ever had a huge kitchen fail? After I spent the evening cleaning my oven from the cupcake fail (previous post) I started over, with a cheat (doctor mix) and home made Magnolia Buttercream Icing.

Creating your own picks is really easy, and you can customize with whatever your theme is... here we were cheering the Colts on for the Superbowl...sniff, sniff...

And to dress up a cupcake, making a sweet outfit for it is perfect (aka a cupcake wrapper)

When you are using writing on your paper (printed myself) make sure you label your template top and bottom (as you see in my picture, another fail!) It all worked out in the long run!

Oh, and you can make your own template with whatever size cupcake liner you are baking in, see, just cut a bit larger than the liner itself! Easy Peasy!

These were the supplies I used. Printed papers (the grass was purchased at Hobby Lobby) glue runner, paper cutter, card stock (for template) a 2D tip for the icing and paper shreds for the cupcake stand.

San Diego

This week has been quiet here for me. Our family is in San Diego, California. This is our last day. So far we have spent time at Sea World, on The Midway (an incredible Navy Aircraft Carrier), at the San Diego Zoo, and hanging on the bay at Point Loma. The food has been awesome, the sun shiny and I am just blessed to have been able to spend this week here. I am thankful.

Pedestal Serving Tray...Trash to Treasure...and an old silver polishing trick!

After spending 20 minutes at the Thrift Store on Post I found a REALLY black silver candlestick and an oval platter. I didn't have any silver polish at home, and I wasn't going to budget some funds to purchase it for this project, so I went for the old tomato ketchup trick for polishing silver.

I used Gorilla Glue to adhear the silver candlestick to the platter and left it for a few hours while I ran errands with my kiddos and picked up my soldier from pre-Air Assault Training (more on that later).

This evening I had a few mint cookies left over that my sweet children hadn't devoured and my soldier's current favorite treat, peanut m&m's, and my favorite candle scent and snapped a few after pictures.

Old fashioned Kettle Corn. N'uf Said!

1/4 cup oil

1/4 cup white sugar

3/4 cup popping corn

salt

Heat oil, sugar and popping corn on medium/high heat until all corn is popped. Remove from heat and salt to taste.... perfect fall treat!

Cream Cheese-Banana-Nut Bread

Ingredients:

3/4 cup butter, softened
1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese, softened
2 cups sugar
2 large eggs
3 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups mashed bananas (1 1/4 pounds unpeeled bananas, about 4 medium)
1 cup chopped pecans, toasted
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Preparation:

Beat butter and cream cheese at medium speed with an electric mixer until creamy. Gradually add sugar, beating until light and fluffy. Add eggs, 1 at a time, beating just until blended after each addition.

Combine flour and next 3 ingredients; gradually add to butter mixture, beating at low speed just until blended. Stir in bananas, pecans, and vanilla. Spoon batter into 2 greased and floured 8- x 4-inch loafpans.

Bake at 350° for 1 hour or until a long wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean and sides pull away from pan, shielding with aluminum foil last 15 minutes to prevent browning, if necessary. Cool bread in pans on wire racks 10 minutes. Remove from pans, and cool 30 minutes on wire racks before slicing.

Yes the Bread sticks are about 18 inches long! They were a hit! I made an Italian herb bread (dough cycle) machine recipe with Parmesan and Mozzarella cheese, brushed the sticks with olive oil, butter salt and pepper when they came out of the oven.

We purchased a bag of apples from Sam's Club a few weeks ago, and although they were not "bad" the apple lovers in our family thought the flavor and texture wasn't "spot-on" after they sat... so I had read a while ago that you can use your bread machine to make jellies and sauces... here we go! I used five apples, 1/4 cup sugar, 1/2 cup cranberry juice, 1/4 tsp pumpkin pie spice and a splash of water... set the machine on quick bread and reset it twice after a 20 minute bake... yummy chunky applesauce with our pork chops for dinner!

Wedding plans, in the deep south of Texas. South Padre Island to be exact. It is fun to be around all the planning and getting pretty for the weekend. My sweet Danielle will play violin on the beach for her, an Irish entrance and traditional march to exit... pre-service music including Bach and Handel... I love the violin!

I am searching a way to place photos on my blogs while I am staying with my sister in Texas, without wifi in the house I am finding it hard to get to a local coffee house to blog.

I am continually thankful for God's graciousness in provisions for my family. At times it is breath taking. HE is awesome.

We spent an afternoon on the beach of Lake Superior, because, well, I'm thinking that we will miss the lush drive and the cool wind in Texas. Plus, we wanted to sport our Army tees as a family to support my sweet man! He leaves Thursday... I am sad, yet excited for him. I pray that I can be helpful to my sister and parents as they are gracious to host my family while my soldier is training... thank God for them! Good bye Great Lakes!

We do not have a routine life.

I am happy we home school so that our family time is flexible.

My sweet man hands me a glass of iced water.

We take a trip to Duluth to visit an emergency hospitalisation of a parishioner, in a cloudy, rainy road... the road seemed to be tunnel-like with a light at the end. We received a call at 7-ish and got home at 1am... just me and my husband. I was blessed with the time with him, and am always in awe at how God uses him to share HIS grace and care for our congregations. Praying for them day.

Okay, so we traveled to Milwaukee, Wisconsin yesterday... my husband is a pastor and a parishoner was going into surgery... I know a 6 hour drive, but It is so worth it though. If you see how these visits make a difference in peoples life. I am thankful that my husband is willing to take the time to share God's Comfort and Forgiveness... no matter what.

Anyway

We ate at Noodles and Company. I LOVE this place. I have only eaten there maybe four times (we live in a remote community)... so when we travel out of town it is a true blessing to have dinner out. Today I am going to "mock-up" a noodle recipe! I will post pics later! Whole Wheat Pasta, fresh Romas, garlic, balsamic, onion.... yummm-o!

I am torn each year before attending service. Thinking I MUST be mournful, that my FEELINGS must be pulled to sadness. BUT, I live under Grace. Constantly. So each Maundy Thursday and Good Friday I wrestle with the "am I sad enough" feeling. Then I go to the Tenebrae service.

And I get it.

I understand.

It is so not about what I am feeling. It is how Lent, Holy Week and Easter of our church season "keeps it real" for me.

I am thankful.

Really.

FULL of thanksgiving to Christ in a solemn, reverent way.

I thank my father that he has taken me out of my comfort zone and lead me to places that I would have never imagined I would live. I am thankful he gave me this man to be part of me, and to Love Christ together on this adventure. When I am in His Word I am strong and courageous... and when we are in His Word together it is a beautiful thing. I am thankful that my dh is a pastor and in God's Holy Word constantly.

First, our cat, Shadow. Can't you just see the sarcasm in his eyes. Oh, the life of a cat.

My sweet man searched the www and found my gear that is stripped (again) in my Kitchen Aid Professional 6 Mixer. He sent for it as a thoughtful gift four my 19th wedding anniversary! YIPPEE!

Then, when it arrived, he spent the evening replacing the gear. I love this man. And as you can see he wore an appropriate shirt for the task! Thank you my man!

This evening we will enjoy fresh ground wheat again. (BTW, this gear is stripped mostly due to mixing large amounts of sugar based items, like icings and cookies... as per the Kitchen Aid customer service.) And the part can be found here... it is pretty easy to replace yourself.

Farina=Semolina

Okay, all bread bakers. Farina, Cream of Wheat or what ever you are calling it in your household is really a coarse version of Semolina. So, for some reason (which I am truly thankful of course) the ladies from church "bless" me with bags of "farina". My family doesn't really appreciate hot mushy cereal in the morning. They do love

Crusty Breads

So, when baking my fresh breads I substitute 1 cup "farina" or "semolina" (which btw, I usually spend a fortune on in specialty flour bins) in with the flours. I also use it for dusting the stones or pans when baking... especially good for pizza!

Tonight is Friday Night Pizza and Movie night. I am using this recipe for my pizza dough, doubled and two cups of "semolina" in the mix.

My boys enjoy our visits to a hotel with our family friends (other pastor's families)... one of the things they do every winter is swim for hours in the pool, run outside and roll around in the snow... and then jump into the hot tub... their entire being steaming with the hot/cold surge... I have wanted to share this photo for a while, and just "misplaced" it until now.

You may know that my pastor/husband is the shepherd for two churches. The churches are 30 miles apart.

It snows EVERYDAY in the U.P. of Michigan.

He didn't make it to the second church service this morning.

An Elder went to pick him up and bring him back, and another Elder preached his sermon. Thank goodness he left it in the pulpit.

He is fine.

There were 3 cars, a logging truck, 2 snowmobile trailers, and a tow truck involved in this accident.

Yup, seven vehicles.

And another landed in the ditch after he left.

Thank the Lord!

This bowling ball had a bit of a soda accident... and the wholes were filled with soda... oops! Thank Goodness it was diet!

Pasta Dough is easy as posted here... We also enjoyed a Spinach Pasta , just by adding 1/3 cup of canned or frozen spinach to the dough instead of the water.

For the Cheese Filling:

1 1/2 Cup Ricotta or drained Cottage Cheese

1/2 Cup Mozzarella Cheese

1/2 Cup Parmesan Cheese

Salt and Pepper to taste

1 egg

1/2 tsp each basil, garlic, and onion

Tuesday: Grilled Beer Bratwursts with Fried Potato Coins and Scalloped Corn

I am trying to be patient and stress-free during some changes in our family. I am not usually a stress-filled wife, mommy, person... but this time of my life is full of change. All of the change is totally and completely out of my control (which I am also not usually concerned about) and I am getting stuck in the ho-hum attitude. So I am going to our comforting, caring, constant Father and am happy to begin this new Psalm study with a group of ladies... Changes will be announced as they come to fruition, meanwhile may HE calm my heart and home.

Super Bowl Buffet

This superbowl was spent at our house with great friends. We had some wonderful laughs, a little shouting at the television, some prayerful moments of fellowship, and of course, good food! Thanks be to God!

I used my salvaged-from-the-side-of-the-road oldtimey washing machine as our beverage cooler, with the opened lid as a tea service. Fun. It was easy to drain out the water the next morning... I did place a large trash bag to keep most of the ice in, but wouldn't use that step next time.

Steak Fries... on the Cheap

I brainstormed an idea, and came up with this fun way to make steak fries. Growing up I loved Shake-n-Bake. I am waaayy to cheap to buy this product so I went here (you can see my laptop next to my mixture with recipe site) and made a homemade mix.)

I cut up 2# of potatoes and placed into the bag. (When I make this the next time I will add more oil to enable it to "stick" better to the potatoes.)

Shake shake shake. -n- Bake bake bake

Easy peasy. Served up with gourmet burgers with jalapenos and Amish butter cheese. Oh, and frosted brownies.

We are stuffed.

Okay, so am I strange at my packing strategy? We are planning to go to our yearly trip to Fort Wayne, IN. Where there is a pastor's conference. (I love getting together with dear friends and hanging out in the hot tub and having girl chat.) ANYway, these are some things on my list... indoor grill, crock pot, dish soap and eating utensils. I guess you are understanding, in our little two bed room we try to get as many of our meals prepared as possible. Does anyone else do this? See, with three teens, even eating at a cheapo fast food place we spend $40... and Danielle and I don't drink soda! Here is our meal plan in the hotel, and if you are in the next room, sorry it smells so good!

Also, we ALWAYS stop by Shipshewana and shop at the wonderful Amish meat market and the bulk food store (E&S Sales) I love these stores!

Have I mentioned that this man proposed after a week, and we were married a week later?! He is my shiny armor man! My heart still beats fast when I see him enter a room. Sweet Love!

This is one thing we adore about homeschooling. Boys doing history with his kitten in his lap. Sweet.

So, okay, it is January, and I was blessed with this gift from my mother-in-law. She is very thoughtful and remembers all of my favorites. Ritter Sport chocolate, German Cookies, Marzipan Marble Cake, Landjaeger, Gummi Bears, and good coffee. So much for that January diet, but you know, I couldn't hurt her feelings, right? I really must enjoy these treats!

I am blessed indeed!

I was looking at crafty sites last night and WOW... look what others have found out!

Did you know that the #6 clear plastic is shrinky-dink material?

If you are using colored pencils to color the plastic, you must rough up the smooth surface.

I used a heat tool to "shirnk" the plastic, but you can in an oven too.

So sorry about the blur, but you can get an idea of the shrinkage...I used a rubber stamp for this charm.

I made a ring by forming the strip around a glue stick and then placing another charm on top... too easy and cute!

These are some of the items I made in about 5 minutes... and my boys are really having a great time with this new found craft!

The Tournament Begins. Our 17yo dd has plans to hang out with the girls and bring in 2009 tonight. The boys and parents are hanging in our own personalized bowling alley! Yup, the Wii tournament begins tonight between the four of us. We are going to enjoy Nachos, Pizza, taquitos, Corn Dogs, and Soda while bowling in our living room. (foods that we enjoy the bowling alley) Moving furniture and making room. Bring it on boys! (So glad I don't have to have the bright pink 4 pound ball and embarrass myself!)

I was comforted by a blog friend (To the right- It's time for more Coffee) today with this passage. I CLING to this promise from My Heavenly Father. This year is sure to bring HIS PLANS... some in the process of happening, some unknown. I love that there is always something "fresh" in HIS PLANS, that HIS PLANS are always right and true. When I turn to "my plans" he is always there to pick me up, forgive me, renew me and embrace me as His child. So, with 2009 on the way, and reflection from my years past, I CLING to this promise and look forward to HIS PLANS!

Poke your finger into the center, fry in oil, and dip in sugars... really, I know, don't give me a hard time... the years of culinary school and I am frying pre-made dough??!! Yup! Cheap-o and EasyShmeasy! The kiddos love this, and can even make them on their own, without an hour of rise time, rolling and flour all about. Secret's Out!

These are our family's newest favorite cookies. Russian Tea Cookies. We totally omit the nuts and use almond flavoring... wow, the texture is just awesome!

My Sweet Happy Man... really he is totally the nicest person I have ever met. I adore him! He Loves the Lord and shares freely the forgiveness that Baby Jesus brings. I can't wait to see what the year 2009 brings to us. Thank you, my man, for being adventurous, patient, and "all that". BTW, he has been so faithful in running a four mile treadmill daily, he is solid! I am blessed with the complete package!

A sweet friend from our Parish invited me to make noodles with her. Her late husband was Italian and she blessed him with this delightful treat during the Christmas season. Thank you Eva for making me a part of your memories.

Recipe:

3 eggs

3 cups of flour

1/2 of eggshell of water per egg added

Blend in food processor until a ball forms, knead a bit longer. Let rest for 3-5 minutes covered and feed through your pasta machine as directed.

Great tips: placing a sheet under a drying rack to catch the loose noodles

We also made raviolis, what an awesome Christmas gift to my family!

Our Lutheran Women's Missionary League along with the Youth Group combined talent and energy to sponsor this year's Christmas Cookie Drive. Goodness, have you ever tried to count 5,000, Yup FIVETHOUSANDSUGARBITS sitting on the long fellowship hall tables! This fundraiser was a fun event, and you know, there is always a gem that blesses us...the leaders, THANKYOU!

BTW, there were 30 cookies per plate for $6... what a deal!
